The House The Renovation Of A Historic Gem Honoring Chuck, Verandas Previous Innkeeper Originally built in 1853 by Benjamin Beery, the structure of The Verandas mansion suffered extensive fires and water damage in 1992. Boarded up and decaying, the mansion was purchased by previous owner Chuck Pennington, with his late partner, in May 1995. The vision was to transform the abandoned and deteriorating historic property into a bed and breakfast inn that offered a gracious vision into the beauty of antebellum Wilmington North Carolina. After extensive demolition, including the removal of more than 80,000 pounds of plaster, 10,000 pounds of radiators, and more than 20 dump trucks of debris, the entire house was stripped down to the studs. A completely new infrastructure was then created for the house. This included new wiring, heating, air conditioning, plumbing, insulation, and walls. A sprinkler system and emergency lighting systems were added to ensure the ultimate safety of guests. After more than a year of complete renovation, the mansion was professionally decorated to provide a professional business atmosphere for the sophisticated executive as well as to provide a comfortable weekend retreat for tourists. English and American antiques as well as traditional furniture were selected to achieve this goal. The Verandas Bed and Breakfast Inn welcomes a continual influx of guest who want to experience true southern hospitality, but it is also a home. A fanatic collector of antiques, art, and period furnishings, previous innkeeper Chuck Pennington decorated all the guest rooms with items as such. Water everywhere. And wind whistling through the front doors. Hurricane Florence wreaked havoc on our beautiful historic house. The Cat 1 storm that hit Wilmington on Sept 14, destroyed one of the home’s immense chimneys, creating a roof cave-in and causing extensive damage to the interior of the home. The front doors were blown in by the storm, which compounded the internal wind and rain destruction. We also lost a centuries old oak tree in the back yard, ripping up the rear brick stairs and wide brick veranda off the dining room, and tearing apart the sunroom. A week later, a short in the water-logged cove lighting in our gourmet kitchen caused an early-morning fire and extensive damage, which was barely extinguished by our post-Florence malfunctioning sprinkler system. Our new theme song should be, “I Will Survive.” We did it, inspired by the love we have for this very special home. Please come celebrate resilience with us. This is a very popular room and books up early. Guest Room Eight is a very calm, large room, at 400 square feet and has a 9-foot ceiling. Four large windows and a decorative fireplace set the stage for the large Antique French metal and brass bed and a beautiful mahogany armoire. Walls are painted light blue, which is subdued with the addition of a faux finish of a grey glaze. The decorative fireplace is natural pine. The valance fabric is reminiscent of peacock feathers. The blue and white ginger jars and plates are a combination of antique and new pieces. The small Eastlake chairs are upholstered in cut velvet and are arranged with an Empire settee in a taupe velvet for guests’ comfort. The en suite bathroom has a fun and colorful orange, green, and white wallpaper, with the marble finishes, floor, and garden size soaking tub that are Veranda’s signature appointments. The views from the windows are stunning, with eye-level sunsets in the evening. This third floor guest room is just steps from access to the cupola – the highest residential point in the city – with an intimate seating area and 360-degree view of historic Wilmington. A room especially for those with bold, but sophisticated, tastes. A corner room like all the others at Verandas, Room 3 also has a private en suite bathroom with marble vanity, marble floor, and garden size soaking tub. The bathroom wallpaper is a sophisticated, Chinese-style cherry blossom print on a grayish silver background. Complete with decorative fireplace, the guest room is very dramatic and bold with full-length draperies in a black and gold horizontal stripe pattern. A classic wallpaper border in black, gold, and silver tops the light gray walls. The mantel of the decorative fireplace displays items from the innkeeper’s collection of collectibles and artifacts. There are two comfortable chairs, an antique dresser with obelisks that hold the mirror. The small desk was formerly a melodeon and sits underneath a window, next to a decorative fireplace. A four-poster rice bed completes the room. This room has access to both the upper front and back verandas from the second floor hallway, perfect for enjoying an evening aperitif or after dinner drink. The room has a 10-1/2 foot ceiling. Newly renovated, this luxurious room is very sophisticated. Guest Room Seven is a very masculine looking room with full draperies and cornices – but is often a favorite of our women guests who describe it as “uniquely romantic.” The paneled walls (original to the house) are faux-finished a deep gold-brown and then glazed with a burnt umber finish. Decorated in bamboo, rattan, and with accessories and artwork from the Amazon River Basin, Guest Room Seven is very exotic and romantic. It could be described as a cross between “Out of Africa,” Key West, and the Orient Express. The headboard on the king size bed was designed by the innkeeper. The art includes framed fabric, antique ducks, oars, Kenyan baskets, and unique seashells. The slipper chairs have been upholstered in stunning yellow with leather trim, and brilliant blue. Note the perfect Art Deco table between the two chairs. The wallpaper, called Orange Grove, brings green and orange into the terra-cotta colored bathroom, which also features marble vanity, marble floor, and a garden-sized soaking tub. From the bathtub, there is a wonderful view of rooftops and chimneys. Don’t miss the leopard print carpet. The Verandas offers eight large guestrooms . All are corner rooms. Five have King Size Beds and three have Queen Size beds. Four rooms are on the second floor, and four rooms are on the third floor. On the second floor, the four corner guestrooms have direct access to two verandas. These rooms have a higher ceiling and are more “grand” than the rooms on the third floor. All rooms have the same first-class amenities: Color TV with cable (some VCR’s), telephones with computer modem jacks, and individual air conditioning/heat controls. Each room has a top-of-the-line Serta Hotel Mattress with hand-ironed 100% cotton sheets and Matelasse bedspreads. Bathrooms have garden-size soaking tubs with shower, marble floors, marble vanity tops, and custom wainscoting and vanities. Large mirrors, supplemental heat, exhaust, lighting, and built-in nightlights are in each bathroom. Makeup mirrors, hair dryers, and Caswell Massey as well as other custom amenities are provided. Rooms are furnished and decorated from the private collection of the owner, with original artwork, unique collectibles and decorating accents, antique light fixtures, comfortable lounge furniture, and small desks. They all have either carpeting or hardwood floors with Oriental rugs. Guest Room One was in the movie “A Touch of Fate,” featuring Teri Hatcher. Large corner room on the 2nd floor with an en suite bathroom. The bathroom is small, with a beautiful marble floor, marble vanity, garden-size soaking tub, wainscoting and stunning tropical floral wallpaper. The sculpted Oriental rug sets the stage for furnishings that include a queen size bed, and a very comfortable lounge chair in the corner that is perfect for reading or dozing off. Three of the pieces of art of reproductions of antique Persian prints, purchased in El Escorial, Portugal, and part of the innkeeper’s personal collection purchased on his own world travels. The walls are a soothing sea green. The pattern in the center of the valances is custom designed to match the dust ruffle. The windows overlook the back veranda and the garden.
