The Verandas has survived the COVID pandemic, weathered the destruction caused by Hurricane Florence, operated consistently through decades of change – and this glorious house is more beautiful than ever.
Read our story is in SALT Magazine, “A Stylish Survivor’s Story.”
In the aftermath and continuing concern inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have navigated 2020 and the better part of 2021 with the utmost attention to health safety. We encourage vaccinations, the use face masks, and social distancing when possible. If you are health-compromised, or have specific concerns, please telephone in advance of your stay to make sure that you will be comfortable and relaxed while enjoying the elegance of The Verandas.
Hurricane Florence was a Cat 1 storm that hit Wilmington on Sept 14 2018. The storm destroyed one of the home’s immense chimneys, creating a roof cave-in and causing extensive damage to the interior of the home. The front doors were blown in by the storm, which compounded the internal wind and rain destruction. We also lost a centuries old oak tree in the back yard, ripping up the rear brick stairs to the veranda off the dining room, and tearing apart the sunroom. We have recovered and redecorated, and believe that The Verandas is more beautiful than ever.
We restored this gorgeous historic home decades ago, and we are committed to maintaining the vision of antebellum grace. We continually call upon the very finest craftsmen, artisans, work crews, and contractors from around the state. They all have our heartfelt appreciation for loving The Verandas as much as we do.
Follow The Verandas on Facebook for our continuing story, and updates on the ongoing renovation and updates to our beautiful historic home. We are always working on something to make our home a perfect marriage of historic elegance and modern comfort. To that end, we are always acquiring collectibles, objets d’art, and antique furniture, and we often move these treasures around the home; your room may not be exactly as represented in our photos on this website. We promise that any changes we make are always an artful improvement.

I couldn’t imagine there being a better B&B around. We were treated to wonderful gourmet breakfasts, friendly and informative conversations and other unexpected and welcome treats. The house is stunning and comfortable whether you’re inside or outside on the verandas.

Our host was the ideal model of the perfect host, warm, welcoming and so kind. The breakfasts were served on formal dining room on large 12 place table with lovely china and silver, and were delicious gourmet offerings. We thoroughly enjoyed our entire stay, highly recommend it, and plan to return!

When you first arrive, you are greeted at the front door by the owner. The house is massive and decorated with antiques and furniture from around the world. The room we selected was exactly what we expected it would be and we very much enjoyed the many comforts it afforded.

The best B&B we have stayed in- what a treat! The house is an elegant Colonial house, lovingly and sympathetically renovated to a very high standard. The owner is dedicated to seeing to every need of his guests, with lots of extra touches, such as cheese & wine, cookies etc. All guests have a chance to chat , we joined other couples for an enjoyable evening meal in a local restaurant.

We arrived on a very wet day to a wonderful warm welcome. Everything about this property is lovely. We had room 3 which was absolutely stunning and had everything you could ever wish for. Downstairs in the butler’s pantry there are snacks, wine and sherry and it was lovely to sit with the friendly and very helpful owner Chuck and chat about a variety of topics. Breakfast the following morning was hearty and delicious and we would definately stay here again.

My husband and I had a 2 day stay with the Verandas for a short get-away trip. We enjoyed staying here very much–the building is located in the heart of the historical district. It’s a quiet and beautiful neighborhood, and 2 blocks away from the water front. The rooms are gorgeous and spacious. It was lovely to enjoy a glass of complimentary wine on one of these verandas. Great water pressure in the bathroom. We also loved the breakfast — the owner really put a lot of effort into making it a memorable experience for his guests.
