After nine long months, The Verandas has recovered from Hurricane Florence – and this glorious house is more beautiful than ever.
Read our story is in SALT Magazine, “A Stylish Survivor’s Story.”
The Cat 1 storm that hit Wilmington on Sept 14, destroyed one of the home’s immense chimneys, creating a roof cave-in and causing extensive damage to the interior of the home. The front doors were blown in by the storm, which compounded the internal wind and rain destruction. We also lost a centuries old oak tree in the back yard, ripping up the rear brick stairs to the veranda off the dining room, and tearing apart the sunroom.
We restored this gorgeous historic home once, and we have done it again. We have called upon the best craftsmen, artisans, work crews, and contractors from around the state. They all have our heartfelt appreciation for loving The Verandas as much as we do.
Follow The Verandas on Facebook for the story on our Hurricane Florence recovery, photos of our storm remediation and restoration journey, and updates on the ongoing renovation of our beautiful historic home. We are always working on something to make our home a perfect marriage of historic elegance and modern comfort.

More About The Verandas Experience
I couldn’t imagine there being a better B&B around. Chuck goes above and beyond to make your stay one you’ll never forget. We were treated to wonderful gourmet breakfasts, friendly and informative conversations and other unexpected and welcome treats. The house is stunning and comfortable whether you’re inside or outside on the verandas.
Our host, Chuck Pennington, is the ideal model of the perfect host, warm, welcoming and so kind. The breakfasts were served on formal dining room on large 12 place table with lovely china and silver, and were delicious gourmet offerings prepared by Chuck and his able assistant, Jennifer. We thoroughly enjoyed our entire stay, highly recommend it, and plan to return!
This B&B was fabulous. Chuck the owner was splendid and attentive to his guests. The interior and exterior of this home were so beautiful. I would recommend this place to anyone. It is walking distance from Wilmington historic district.
Awesome atmosphere and friendly staff! Convenient to to the Riverwalk area and local restaurants.
My wife and I stayed there for our 50th wedding anniversary. We were very please with everything from the very comfortable room with was quite and very relaxing to the owner, Chuck, who had a great suggestions for dinner and sightseeing.
When you first arrive, you are greeted at the front door by the owner, Chuck. The house is massive and decorated with antiques and furniture from around the world. Chuck is also the chef and makes some of the best breakfasts we have ever eaten. The room we selected was exactly what we expected it would be and we very much enjoyed the many comforts it afforded.
The best B&B we have stayed in- what a treat! The house is an elegant Colonial house, lovingly and sympathetically renovated to a very high standard. The owner is dedicated to seeing to every need of his guests, with lots of extra touches, such as cheese & wine, cookies etc. All guests have a chance to chat , we joined other couples for an enjoyable evening meal in a local restaurant.
We arrived on a very wet day to a wonderful warm welcome. Everything about this property is lovely. We had room 3 which was absolutely stunning and had everything you could ever wish for. Downstairs in the butler’s pantry there are snacks, wine and sherry and it was lovely to sit with the friendly and very helpful owner Chuck and chat about a variety of topics. Breakfast the following morning was hearty and delicious and we would definately stay here again.
My husband and I had a 2 day stay with the Verandas for a short get-away trip. We enjoyed staying here very much–the building is located in the heart of the historical district. It’s a quiet and beautiful neighborhood, and 2 blocks away from the water front. The rooms are gorgeous and spacious. It was lovely to enjoy a glass of complimentary wine on one of these verandas. Great water pressure in the bathroom. We also loved the breakfast — the owner really put a lot of effort into making it a memorable experience for his guests.
Lovely home, beautifully decorated, engaging owner, fantastic breakfast, perfect southern evening.
